Why this matters in 2026
WooCommerce and Gutenberg are not standing still. The platform has taken a major leap forward.
WordPress 7.0 arrived in May with foundational AI and design capabilities, and WooCommerce keeps moving its storefront, cart and checkout onto blocks. The summer 7.1 cycle is pushing responsive styling, interactive states, icons and structured content forward again. Understanding the block system now means learning the layer where both platforms are actively investing.
AI is becoming platform infrastructure
WordPress 7.0 introduced a provider-agnostic AI Client, centralized Connectors and client-side Abilities. Stores can expose typed, permission-aware actions that AI tools and automated workflows can discover and use.
Storefront and checkout are block-native
WooCommerce’s Cart and Checkout blocks, product collection and filter blocks are now the default path. Understanding them means you can design and extend the whole buying flow inside the block editor.
Responsive and interactive styling is moving into the editor
The 7.1 beta cycle brings responsive styles to Global Styles and individual blocks, custom breakpoints in theme.json, and standardized hover and focus states. More store design behaviour can live in WordPress instead of scattered CSS overrides.

Products, blocks, patterns and registered abilities give tools predictable structures to work with — making AI-assisted catalogue, content and merchandising workflows far easier to bring back into an editor-controlled store.

Frequently asked questions about block-based editing
Is Gutenberg a page builder?
Not exactly — Gutenberg is a block-based content editor. While it may be hard to grasp the difference at first, you’ll feel it during use. Its “layout” blocks (columns, grids, rows) let you nest blocks, making the editing experience highly flexible. However, it lacks the classic drag-and-drop feel of traditional page builders, because it’s really a structure-planning tool focused on creating flexible content areas rather than directly assembling a page’s visual appearance. (I actually consider this one of its biggest advantages.)
Is developer background required?
No deep coding knowledge is required. The material can be mastered with basic technical skills, covering everything from block editing to template customization in detail.
Why switch to block-based solutions?
Block-based architecture is WordPress’s future. It’s easier to customize, provides faster load times and aligns better with modern web trends than traditional solutions. The admin interface’s simplicity makes it approachable even for those without technical knowledge, such as virtual assistants or marketers — so the transition simplifies daily work.
Can I use the block editor with a PHP template architecture?
Yes, you can combine the block editor with a PHP-based template architecture. You can keep using traditional WordPress template files (like header.php and footer.php) while using the block editor for content management. I cover this approach specifically during the course.
I already completed the WordPress Developer course. How is this different?
This course focuses on block-based WordPress templates and a deeper understanding of the Gutenberg editor. You won’t learn classic PHP template structures here, but rather modern block-based solutions and how to leverage theme.json. Do I need coding experience with WooCommerce already?
